Heartfelt Communication

February 20, 2020 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm

Communication can be tricky! We sincerely want to connect, we want to understand and we want to contribute in meaningful ways. And we want to be understood and contribute.

Yet, many things can get in the way of clear, connected and resourceful communication. At the core of communication is our attempt to meet our needs. And the best way to get your needs met is to know your needs. Join us to identify your needs and guess at the needs of others to develop a practice of heartfelt communication.

This work is based on non-violent communication and Brené Brown’s work on shame, vulnerability and wholehearted living. We’ll also explore how social conditioning adds to the complexities of communication. By navigating with our hearts via needs we can stay connected, get through the entanglements and build stronger, more resourceful relationships at home, work and in life.

This event is offered by Fran Hart who has spent over 30 years building and living in community, seeking to understand what builds connection and what gets in the way. As an independent bookkeeper, she sees the value of understanding needs to make better choices and not just chasing after money. Developing communication skills gives us access to what’s most important in life, building our resources as families, friends and communities.

Needs:  Resources required to sustain and enrich life.  Needs are universal, synonymous with values. Needs are what’s behind our motivations, actions and choices.

  • A need, when fulfilled, sustains us.
  • A want when fulfilled, entertains us.

Attempting to substitute wants for needs eventually drains us.
